This week we have witnessed the carnivorous actions of Suarez and the grand beginning of the quintessentially English tournament, Wimbers; what a bizarre combination that was. So, when we’re not over at Cabot Circus watching the matches in the sun while sippin’ on a bubble tea, we will most likely be found stuffing our chops with strawberry fro-yo (or just being outrageously jealous of everybody at Glasto).

Anyway, less babble. Bristol, what’s up weekend?

Friday 27th:

Supernature exhibition at The Glasswalk in Cabot Circus. It’s a combo of artists from Bristol, Cambridge, Cornwall and London, all working within the theme of the magnificence of nature. Check it here.

If you haven’t made Glasto either, why not pop over to Stagstonbury at the Stag & Hounds. They’ve gone all out and you should check it out. Plus, it’s free!

Saturday 28th:

Cider, anyone? Bristol Harlequins RFC’s annual and fourth Cider Festival will be kicking off this Saturday. There’s plenty to keep everyone entertained, even the kids, with bouncy castles, games, water slides and plenty of ther treats. Also, there’s a selection of live music throughout.

Sunday 29th:

Chloe Foy and Little Dusty play an intimate performance in The Louisiana basement! Foy’s light distinct vocals and poetic lyrics create a very pure, melodious and enchanting sound, which can captivate any listener. She has a varied musical style with her influences consisting of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Turin Brakes and more recently Johnny Flynn and Bon Iver. More info here.

Have a good one, guys xxx

Ah, Bristol- you babe. The weather has been amazing and (apparently) there’s lots more ahead of us. Plus, dare we say it, The World Cup is officially in full swing. Who you backing?

Friday:

This week saw the start of Big Green week– the UK’s festival of eco ideas, art and entertainment. Across the week and certainly across the weekend there’s a variety of events from fashion shows to city sightseeing.

Also, there’s a film fundraiser based around the film Labrinth, where fancy dress is encouraged and it’s finishing off with a disco.

Saturday:

During the day, why not take a ‘walk on the wild side’ with local naturalist and bushcraft expert Steve England. Join the experts and take part in ‘The Big Bug Hunt’. Learn how to become a nature detective in a special woodland laboratory. Make amazing woodland crafts out of natural materials.

Meet at the Cameron Centre, Romney Avenue (BS7), Lockleaze. A Wild Day at Stoke Park is part of the bigger, better and wilder Festival of Nature 2014, with events across the West of England from May to July, and the Wild Weekend on Bristol’s Harbourside on 14 and 15 June. See Festival of Nature for the full programme.

The City of Bristol College final year students will be beginning their exhibition this Saturday, all being displayed at Centre Space in the city centre. This should be an interesting event and an excellent portrayal of young, local, talent.

Sunday:

Love food? Head out to Kings Weston House to the Love Food Festival. There’s an abundance of street food and other stalls at the grand building, and as the weather promises to behave, it looks like it would be well worth the trip out!

Have a great weekend, whatever you do xxx

The weather has been part crazy this week but things don’t seem to be finishing off too badly. Anyway, less nonsense and more weekend. What’s up?

Friday:

This weekend the Festival of Football Ideas continues, and I think they’ve been a bit of a treat so far. Did anybody else make history night?

Fruitvale Station is the cinema pick of the weekend, showing at The Watershed until the 19th. A truly impressive debut, Fruitvale Station is a vibrant urban drama and a rare thing – as the Guardian quite rightly hailed, it is a movie of unstoppable force that actually really matters. It’s worth it, go and see it.

Saturday:

North Street summer fair, of course. Starting at 10:30 and running right through until 5pm, there should be more than enough time to get round the 50 stalls, and after that maybe head to The Steam Crane– a lovely little pub that we’ve just uploaded onto the app (check it out). They also serve a mean Sunday lunch if you’re around and about then.

Alternatively- and slightly more disco- Shapes are hosting an open air party at Lakota that will be completed with house, techno and maybe even sun.

That’s all we’ve got this week. Sorry it’s short and sweet, but we’re kinda excited that the weather is nice again- beer in the sun, anyone?

Have a good weekend all xxx

Buh- so. It’s almost the weekend, the weather has been pretty crap, we’re a week away from The World Cup, what does Bristol have to offer us? We would also quickly like to take this opportunity to congratulate our winner of the £20 Your Street Gift Card- it was tough, but we loved the imagination of the entry: blackberry picking in Bristol <3

Friday:

In keeping with le football, The Festival of Football Ideas are kicking off with their event that’s in support of Bristol Rovers Community Trust (sorry, city). Their main theme is that a variety of people are interested in football, all coming with different interests, careers and backgrounds- but with the common interest being football. There’s a mixture of events about the design background of football, the shape of football writing, poetry in football and comedy in football. Events vary between £0 and £5, which is very reasonable for their delightful offerings. Full details can be found on their site.

This one is worthy to pencil in over the whole weekend, not just Friday- running right through until the middle of June.

If you’re feeling a bit more disco- even after the parade of bank holidays- why not head over to Motion and check out Boddika, Redlight & co. Open 10pm until late.

Saturday:

St George’s have an evening from the BBC all about wildlife films made in Bristol, with special guests and a live Q & A. It’s a pretty cool event, all part of the Festival of Nature.

Trailer here: BBC Wildlife

This is also one to watch all weekend.

Above and Beyond are a charity that support the NHS by going above and beyond what they can do- and this weekend they’re rounding off their bake off event! Let’s hope lots of money is raised. Full details are on their site.

Sunday:

Elm Tree Farm have a free open day today, from 10am until 2pm- providing an excellent opportunity to visit the animals, the plant nursery and even build a bug hotel. Details on their site.

Sunday:

Of course, it is a Park on Park Street day! This is the day that Park Street will turn into it’s very own Pop- Up event. There’s set to be all sorts there and we’re loving the attention Park Street is getting at the moment- let’s hope the weather can hold out.

Vintage clothing sales- we’re all ears. Opens at 11am, £3 earlty bird entry. You simply select whatever you like, take it to the weigh station and pay at £15 per kilo – that’s around 4 – 5 items! At the Paintworks on Bath Road.

Economical, affordable, fashionable. (And convenient: they accept cash & card).

That’s the weekend sorted. Have a good one! xxx

In true British fashion, the weather is expected to take a turn for the dire this weekend. Why? Probably because it’s the bank holiday. Never mind. There’s plenty of excellent happenings in Bristol. Let’s disco in the rain!

Friday:

This may be your only opportunity for relax time- or this may be your first bit of freedom all week. Whichever way- take it.

We are, like always, feeling pretty peckish, so we’re going to head on over to Veg Fest Bristol. There’s so many stalls there, music, entertainment and disco, right up until 11pm. Over the weekend there’s various different nutrition talks about health, eating and lifestyle- think we might pop in and out. From £3 on the gate, so it’s worth a peep if you’re curious.

Saturday:

This is the first day of Love Saves the Day. Yay! Beautiful-sexy-electronic-Bristol-disco! There’s plenty of notable acts there Saturday, including the amazing Todd Terje, beauty Nina Kraviz, Eats Everything, Moko, Craig Richards, and many, many more!

If that’s not enough or to your taste, Dot to Dot is also kicking off. Acts include Peace, Indiana, The Midnight Beast and loads more. Details here.

Either way, maybe head over to Bagel Boy for afters? There’s a post Love Saves party there- no bagels, just house party vibes. Enjoy!

Sunday:

Today is electro city at Love saves, headliner is SBTRKT and other babes include Jamie xx, John Talabot, Pardon my French, Shy FX and so many more.

Monday:

Mega relaxation. That’s all.

Enjoy xxx

We’re pretty much there, it’s almost the weekend. And for the majority, haven’t we have some lovely weather? Great climes are also forecast for the weekend, which means perfect weather for visiting our beautiful Bristol Lido or taking a drive out to the countryside or Weston Bay, I just love the countryside in the summer. Otherwise, I guess we don’t do too badly in the city, do we? Plenty of happenings this weekend.

Friday:

The babes over at The Crofters Rights are hosting a beer festival, how nice of them- and it’s all in aid of Celebrating 30 years of Brewers Droop on Gloucester Road. I’m in! IT’s a three day spectacular of Beers, Brewing and Live Music, with food from Bristol Eats Street Food Collective, CHOMP Burger and The Crofters Roasts. They’ll also be showcasing fantastic local breweries with opportunities to try them all, in addition to a Q&A presented by the team from Brewers Droop. Drink delicious beer, eat delicious food, maybe have a disco.

Other stuff that isn’t- or doesn’t have to be- alcohol related is:

Minke Whales at Start The Bus:

Organised by Bristol Live Magazine and described as ”Stomping, twisted and folk-driven, with unmistakable guy-girl lead vocals”, it promises to be a fun-filled night. Great little indie bar and pretty excellent diner food. Win, win. Details here.

20th Century Boy at Bristol Hippodrome:

This brand new musical, inspired by the life of rock legend Marc Bolan, explodes onto stage nearly 40 years after the star’s tragic death. Featuring some of the greatest pop songs ever written, 20th Century Boy tells the story of Marc Bolan and his band T Rex, exposing some of the myths and taking the audience on a tearful yet joyful journey through Marc’s fascinating life. Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam and godfather of punk, Bolan was arguably the biggest rock star the Uk had ever seen. Before his tragic death in 1977, just days short of his 30th birthday, Bolan lived life at breakneck speed creating a series of iconic images, a string of number 1 hits, and an army of obsessive fans.

Saturday:

The obvious choice is Rave on Avon, which is a bit of a Stokes Croft tradition. A whole day of free music and partying unites all the best venues, bars and clubs in the Stokes Croft area for a celebration of the best of the city’s music culture. Then, from 6pm one wristband will get to into all the participating venues; including Blue Mountain, Lakota, 51 Stokes Croft, Coroners Court and The Love Inn. Beautiful.

Sunday:

The talented Sophie Jamieson will be performing in The Louisiana basement for her first ever Bristol appearance. Support will be coming from Nanook of the North where they’ll be treating us to a very rare stripped back set. £5-7.

That’s your lot. Apologies for the shortness but brownie points for frugality, as they’re all either moderately priced or free. Plus, it’s set to be sunny- what more do you want?

Kisses xx

With the excitement of the slide and our first May bank holiday over, it’s possibly time to recuperate and rest? That may all seem wise and well but being in Bristol with such good offerings it seems wrong to hide away. There’s plenty of happenings that are carrying on from last weekend including Bristol Food Connections, Once Upon A Street and many of the gallery & museum offerings; however, there’s also lots of new happenings also (fab).

Friday:

Hey Friday- babe, missed you. It’s good to see you back, now what have you got on offer?

Bangers & Tash is a pop-up festival starting today that promises to warm you up for the ensuing frivolity of summer. This is their claim:

We at Busy Fish productions, Babylon Underground and Little One are setting up our pop-up festival at the Black Swan. Saturday will the be the day of getting your knees about your chin, making merry, dancing your nut off, getting your face painted, have a photo taken and then curling up for brief chills in our specially designed Massage Moon Parlour, so you can go relax where there is an interactive doodle space, many many soft things, lighting and invariably hugs and smiles galore.

The Sunday we have brought you a day to recover from the first in all the way you need. In the afternoon we have shisha, food, soft things, an artisan market and as we get into the evening., some of the best up-beat and soul-nurturing acoustic acts around. Picking up the pace we have two of the most renowned MC’s in Bristol Kev El Poeta and Dizraeli, and we top it off sending you flailing home with some live gypsy electro-swing to close the night.

Tickets £6.75 up to £16.50 for the full weekend.

Popping you feet up and feeling the eclectic jazz vibes at Shore Cafe Bar may be a more suited option if you’re feeling social but not outrageous. A lovely setting and some great gems from across the eras, it won’t be disappointing.

Saturday:

The weather forecast is pretty dull and dingy for the rest of the weekend, so maybe cosy up in one of our recommended reasonable eateries, or pop to The Watershed for a viewing of A Thousand Times Goodnight.

Juliette Binoche excels in one of her most powerful performances to date in this gripping tale of a dedicated photojournalist torn between vocational passion and her family. Rebecca (Binoche) is a famous, fearless photojournalist – one of the top five in the world – who is badly injured on assignment photographing a female suicide bomber group in Kabul. On her return home to Ireland, she decides that her family’s (a husband played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and two daughters) ultimatum regarding her job is worth the price, and quits working in danger zones. As her home life begins to return to normal, she’s offered a job documenting a Kenyan refugee camp, one that her boss guarantees will be 100% safe. Her eldest daughter pleas with her to go, and take her along too (it dovetails nicely with a school project on Africa), but things go horribly wrong, and Rebecca can’t shake her old instincts, heading off into the line of fire with her camera… Director Eric Poppe drew upon his experiences at a war photographer in the 1980s, and it shows – the visuals are, of course, stunning. A gripping look at the ties that bind us, and what you are willing to lose in the search to be true to yourself.

Sunday:

The much anticipated Bristol 10k is happening. All those that are taking part, well done and good luck! And all those that are standing by the finishing line or cheering on someone, stay warm and take coffee. The weather promises to be pants 🙂

One final thing… have you downloaded the app? Hit up the store if not- it’s free.

Have a great weekend.

Ah, that wonderfully smug feeling that there’s another bank holiday weekend looming- yes, so soon! But aside from the four day week and extra lie in, it’s also another opportunity to indulge in some Bristol time and feast on the May BH (V1) offerings…

This is the first weekend of Bristol Food Connections and there’s lots of goodies lined up. This weekend offers two evenings of fine dining, the first from Nathan Outlaw and Valentine Warner, and the second from Bristol’s finest and the inimitable Invisible Circus. Sensual, yeah?

Friday is unfortunately sold out but places for Saturday’s surreal dining experience with dishes from the South West’s top chef’s, The Milk Thistle’s resident mixologist, all served by badgers and squirrels off high rise platters- places are still available: £60 pp means they’re quite an indulgence, but it does promise to be a very special event.

Can’t make that, then Josh Eggleton’s team are serving Sunday Lunches en masse in Queen’s Square. Tickets vary from £10 – 20 and slots must be booked in advance.

Friday:

After a four day weekend and a four day week, let’s make plans for this weekend! With forecasted weather of sunshine and showers it doesn’t look like it’s going to be BBQ weather, however there’s lots-a-happenings in Bristol for us to feast on.

Friday:

From 4pm until 11pm there is a Beer Festival at The Victoria. This is hosted by Paul and Dee who boast a variety of twenty ales and cider from around England- maybe take the edge off your busy week and begin the weekend with a tipple 😉

Follow from the festival to the disco? Lakota have one with a two hour set from Oneman and guests including Ryan Hemsworth and Apex DJs. Our fave Hemsworth is a remix he did of Rhye. Tickets are £6, bit of a bargain.

Or, if you’re fancying a ginger cider and free entry, The Crofters Rights have a disco-housey-tech vibes going on at Rumpf. Techno Friday? Not bad.

Saturday:

There’s a free exhibition on at The Painworks on Saturday called the Expressions of Art, open from 10:30 until 6.

However, if the rain gets a bit too much and you’re fancying a bit of a lazy do, the new film Half of a Yellow Sun is showing at The Watershed, featuring the stunning Thandie Newton, it’s based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s bestselling novel, and is an epic love story set amidst the disastrous Nigerian civil war of the late 1960s. Twins Olanna (Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) are wealthy, beautiful, independent young ladies – fresh from their Oxbridge degrees – who embark on markedly different romances with radical university professor Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and mild-mannered Englishman Richard (Joseph Mawle). As the civil war comes to crisis point and chaos engulfs then, they are thrown together and violently torn apart in ways none had every imagined. £8.

Sunday:

If you’re a bit disco’d out, need to detox or just want to enjoy the sites, why not pop along to Bristol Walking Festival? The aim of the event is to get more people out and about, showcase the city both locally and nationally and celebrate Bristol’s reputation as a green, vibrant and creative place.

What are we doing this weekend? We will be out snapping new locations to be uploaded to the app- keep your eyes peeled for updates.
